The BBC has stepped in to fill the festival void in the United Kingdom when Glastonbury takes next year off. The Biggest Weekend, as it's being called, will take place May 25-28 across four sites, in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, with hopes to attract over 175,000 music fans.
According to the BBC, all of the network's music stations will be involved in hosting and/or broadcasting parts of the festival, while all performances are set to be streamed on the BBC's iPlayer mobile and desktop app. There will also be "extensive TV coverage" of the festival on BBC Two and BBC Four, organizers said.
There are currently no plans to repeat the festival in 2019, when Glastonbury returns. Lineups, venue locations and ticketing details will be announced at a later date.
“BBC Music has a strong history of bringing the nation together for some special moments, and this is the biggest single music event ever attempted by the BBC," said Bob Shannen, director of BBC Radio and Music. "We will be celebrating the diversity of music from four different corners of the country, bringing the best UK music to the world and the best global music to the UK."
