Coldplay Surpasses Madonna for No. 5 Highest Grossing Tour of All Time

Coldplay has passed Madonna to claim the No. 5 highest grossing tour of all time, according to ticket sales data reported to Billboard Boxscore.

The British band’s continuing A Head Full of Dreams Tour has now grossed $412 million, pulling ahead of Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet Tour, which earned $408 in revenue in 2008 and 2009.

The all-time highest grossing tour remains U2’s 360 Tour, which tallied a massive $736.4 million during its run from 2009 through 2011.

The A Head Full of Dreams Tour launched in March of 2016 at La Plata’s Estadio Ciudad de La Plata in Argentina. It is currently on a short break until it picks up on Aug. 1 at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The trek is slated to end on Nov. 15 at the same venue where it started: Estadio Ciudad de La Plata.

The tour earned $104.9 million of its total $412 million sum from its 2017 European tour that covered 13 markets on the continent.

With the grosses reported from Europe, the band easily secures the No. 1 ranking on Billboard’s weekly recap of top-grossing Hot Tours (see list, below). The summer run through Europe included 20 sold out performances at 13 stadiums. A total of 1,194,236 tickets were purchased from the opening night in Munich (June 6) through the final stop on this summer’s European leg -- a massive three-night stint in Paris on July 15, 16 and 18.

The Paris concerts, held at the national stadium of France, racked up sales totaling $19.8 million, making the three-show run the highest-grossing concert engagement of 2017, based on reported Boxscores. From all three shows, the Live Nation-produced event amassed a sold ticket count of 235,611.

Although the Paris sales total is the highest of 2017 for Coldplay or any other artist, it is not this tour’s top gross. Four concerts at London’s Wembley Stadium during last summer’s first European leg is still the highest earner with $28.8 million from almost 304,000 sold seats on June 15-16 and 18-19, 2016.

The A Head Full of Dreams Tour kicked off almost 16 months ago on March 31, 2016 in Argentina, the first date on a seven-city run through Latin America. The first European leg followed beginning on May 24 through the first week of July. The third leg covered American markets from July 16, 2016 through early September. An Oceania trek in December and a stretch through Asian markets in April of this year preceded the second European stint this summer.
