Public radio's daily music discovery program World Cafe will have a new voice in your ears this spring. Canadian journalist Talia Schlanger, a regular contributor for the past several months, has been announced to succeed longtime host David Dye beginning Monday, April 3.
Dye announced his retirement as full-time host of World Cafe in November. He has helmed the WXPN-produced program since its inception in October 1991, and will continue to contribute on a part-time basis, plus he'll host a new weekend music program, called Dave's World, beginning Sunday, April 2.
Schlanger has been a contributing host and producer of World Cafe since October. Before that, the Toronto native worked as a radio and TV journalist for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and, earlier, as an actress on Canadian shows like Strange Days at Blake Holsey High and Degrassi: The Next Generation. On stage, she was cast in the first U.S. national tour of Green Day's American Idiot musical.
WXPN's gm Roger LaMay said Schlanger brings "great storytelling, digital fluency, and a love and knowledge of music" to the show, which is distributed by NPR.
Added Schlanger, "Like our listeners, I'm here as a music fan first. Discovering, sharing and connecting over artists is our collective passion, and it’s my mission to serve that as best I can on World Cafe. David Dye is so beloved and respected because for 25 years, audiences have been able to feel the genuine curiosity, excitement and care he has for the music he plays and for the artists who make it. I know this is a big change, but I hope our devoted World Cafe crowd will feel the same degree of passion and care coming from me as we charge forward with amps blaring."
