Ibizan Clubs Congratulate City Council on Illegal Party Crackdowns

Homeowners hosting large-scale events on the island have been hit with more than $98,000 fines.

While tension remains between the governing bodies of Ibiza, residents, tourists and club owners, there are yet some things everyone can agree on --  no more illegal parties.

According to a report by local publication Diario De Ibizathe municipality of San Josep is cracking down on these large-scale events held on private property for financial gain and The Leisure Association -- made up of 27 clubs including Blue Marlin Ibiza, DC-10, Ushuaïa and Hï Ibiza -- are celebrating the move.

"We congratulate this City Council for its determination in these cases,” the Leisure Association says in an English translation of the article, “but it seems there is need for a greater commitment on the part of the authorities of the whole island in the fight against the clandestine parties."

Ibizan residents aren't always fond of the crowds legal parties draw to the beaches and these residential late-night gatherings draw the ire of both professionals and locals. San Josep has reportedly slapped sanctions valued at €84,000, or more than $98,000, to some private home owners.

Perhaps club owners believe strict enforcement of nightlife laws could ease pressure on their own legal establishments. Earlier this month, the municipality of San Jose tightened restrictions on beach-front club venues, requiring owners to get local licenses in order to keep the party going.
