Brooklyn's Barclays Center will celebrate its fifth anniversary with the inaugural "Shining a Light on Brooklyn" gala at the historic Liberty Warehouse on Red Hook's Pier 41 on Oct. 12. Proceeds from the event -- which will feature a performance by Leon Bridges and an after-party DJ set by Chromeo -- will benefit the venue's Barclays Center Cares foundation, which supports community programs for children and families through its work with more than 300 schools, food pantries, homeless shelters, health facilities and nonprofits.
“We’re proud to be a part of the Brooklyn community, and it has done such an incredible job embracing us for the past five years,” said Brett Yormark, CEO of Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment in a statement. “Shining a Light on Brooklyn is our opportunity to celebrate those who have supported our borough and to recognize our collective efforts to give back.”
Barclays has hosted more than 1,000 sports and entertainment events since its opening in Sept. 2012 and, according to a press release announcing the gala, the Foundation will honor "key people who have made a profound impact in the community through music, athletics, culinary arts, and sustainability."
Among the honorees are SB Projects founder Scooter Braun, best known for his work managing Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Kanye West and Usher as well as his support for of numerous charities, including Make-A-Wish Foundation, Pencils of Promise, and F--- Cancer.
Others to be honored for their charitable work are: Brooklyn Nets player Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, New York Islanders player Anders Lee, former WBA middleweight boxing champion Daniel Jacobs, WBC international bantamweight champion and undefeated boxer Heather Hardy, Gleason's Gym owner Bruce Silverglade, food and beverage supplier Levy Restaurants, Junior's restaurant owner Alan Rosen and Brooklyn Botanic Garden President Scot Medbury.
