Showtime Acquires Rights to Rare Prince Sign O The Times Concert Film

Showtime announced on Wednesday (Aug. 23) that it has acquired the rights to the rarely seen 1987 Prince concert film Sign o' The Times. The movie -- written and directed by Prince as a chronicle of the tour in support of the album of the same name (his ninth release) -- will air on American TV for the first time in more than a decade on Sept. 16 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

The Sign o' The Times double-album was Prince's first after disbanding the Revolution and the film features live versions of songs including “U Got the Look” (with Sheena Easton), “If I Was Your Girlfriend” and “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man,” as well as the title track and earlier smash “Little Red Corvette.” The majority of the film, which features Sheila E. on drums, was shot at Prince's Paisley Park Studios in Minnesota and on dates in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Though hailed by critics at the time as a vibrant, exciting concert film on part with such classics as the Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense, the 84-minute Sign o' the Times was never issued on DVD.
