Swish swish, bish. MTV’s 2017 Video Music Awards telecast on Sunday beat out HBO's Game of Thrones season 7 finale in the key teen demographic. Hosted by Katy Perry, the show also saw an increase in share of younger viewers (ages 12-24) from last year's telecast.
The VMAs also dominated social media. On Twitter, the show trended globally for 13 hours, beating out Game of Thrones as the top trending topic.
At its peak, the VMAs had 8 out of the 12 top trending topics in the US, including moments involving Taylor Swift, Fifth Harmony, Ed Sheeran, Alessia Cara, Shawn Mendes, Miley Cyrus and Logic.
It wasn’t all good news for the award show: linear simulcast was down 16 percent with the P18-34 rating. However, Facebook video views saw a 34 percent bump from last year.
