At least two record labels have joined fundraising efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
Washington D.C.-based indie Carpark Records announced that all of today's digital sales from its Bandcamp account will be donated to the American Red Cross to aid relief efforts across Texas and other affected areas. Artists who have released music on the label include Beach House, Cloud Nothings, Dan Deacon, Toro Y Moiand Speedy Ortiz, among many others (see a list).
The Malaco Music Group, home to R&B/soul imprints Savoy and J-Town, has pledged to donate 100 percent of its online catalog sales to the Salvation Army. The label group set the donation window from Aug. 30 until Sept. 10. Artists to have recorded under the Malaco name include Bobby "Blue" Bland, Mahalia Jackson, Johnnie Taylor and Tina Campbell. Many of Malaco's facilities in Jackson, Miss. were destroyed during a tornado in 2011.
At least 38 people have died as a result of Harvey, with untold amounts of residents across South Texas and southwestern Louisiana displaced or stranded.
Many artists, actors and other celebrities have stepped up in recent days in order to raise money for relief and recovery efforts. Dallas native Solange Knowles announced that proceeds from her Sept. 28 show in Boston would be donated; her sister Beyonce launched a fundraiser; Sandra Bullock donated $1 million; the Kardashians, $500,000 to the Red Cross; Miley Cyrus said she would donate $500,000 as well; and Drake, Fall Out Boy and Chris Young have all pledged financial support.
