Taylor Swift is on top Down Under. The pop superstar bowed at No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart with “Look What You Made Me Do” (Universal), the first track lifted from her forthcoming sixth album Reputation. Meanwhile, Queens Of The Stone Age are kings of the national albums chart with Villains (Matador/Inertia), the American alternative rockers’ seventh album.
“Look What You Made Me Do” is Swift’s fifth chart-topper in this market and her first since "Bad Blood" led the survey in June 2015. It’s her first appearance on the chart since her collaboration with Zayn Malik, “I Don't Wanna Live Forever,” from the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack, reached No. 3 last December.
By snagging this week’s chart crown, Taylor Swift deposes another superstar female singer from the U.S., Pink, whose single “What About Us” (RCA/Sony) dips 1-2. When “What About Us” bowed at the top two weeks ago, Pink drew level with Delta Goodrem for the second most No. 1 singles since the inception of the ARIA Charts in mid-1983. Two artists share the lead with 10 each: Madonna and Kylie Minogue.
Just hours after he was unveiled as headliner for this year’s NRL Grand Final on Oct. 1, Macklemore holds-down third position on the chart with “Glorious” (ADA/Warner) featuring Skylar Grey; while Justin Bieber and BloodPop’s “Friends" (Def Jam/Universal); and Imagine Dragons' "Thunder" (Interscope/Universal) complete the top 5.
Though she just misses out on a spot inside the top 5, Dua Lipa equals a career best as her U.K. chart-leader “New Rules” (Warner) rises 10-6, the same position “Be The One” peaked at in May 2016.
Queens Of The Stone Age's Villains arrives four years after ...Like Clockwork, which also hit No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart. It’s the band’s fifth appearance in the national top 10 dating back to September 2002, when Songs For The Deaf peaked out at No. 7.
Also opening high is The War On Drugs’ fourth studio set A Deeper Understanding (Atlantic/Warner), which bows at No. 5 for the Philadelphia band’s first appearance inside the top 10, as Canberra folk singer-songwriter Kim Churchill easily grabs a career best with Weight_Falls (Warner), which starts at No. 6; and Fifth Harmony’s self-titled third album (through Syco/Sony) begins at No. 9. The group’s first album as a quartet is also their second to crack the top ten, following 7/27, which went one better at No. 8 in June 2016.
