Green Day Donates $100,000 to Americares Hurricane Harvey Relief, Live Streaming Special Performance Before Tampa Show

Green Day is the latest band to pledge support to those affected by the unprecedented rains and flooding in and around Houston as a result of Hurricane Harvey. The band will broadcast a special intimate performance on Facebook Liveon Tuesday (Sept. 5) at 4 p.m. ET in support of Americares, with the band pledging $100,000 to the health-focused relief group's efforts. 

The set will stream live from backstage at MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre in Tampa, Florida, where they are playing a gig tonight. "Americares is truly grateful to have Green Day's support," said Americares President and CEO Michael J. Nyenhuis in a statement. "Their generosity and dedication means so much to us, as we restore health and hope for those affected by Hurricane Harvey."

Americares had an emergency response team in Texas before Harvey made landfall and according to Nyenhuis they immediately began working with federal, state and local officials to meet the urgent health needs of those impacted by the 1,000-year storm. To make a donation directly to Americares, click here. The music industry has stepped up in a major way to help victims of the storm, whose economic impact is predicted to surpass the $120 billion mark.

Also pitching in is SiriusXM satellite radio, which began running banners across its channels encouraging its 32 million-plus listeners to donate to the Red Cross beginning on Friday (Sept. 1). Hosts on various music and talk channels have also been discussing the charitable effort on air and repeating the Red Cross information, which alternates with the artist name/song title and on Monday (Sept. 4) American Red Cross CEO Gail J. McGovern appeared on the Urban View channel with Joe Madison to discuss her organization's efforts.

The label Yep Roc Records also announced on Tuesday that it will donate a portion of proceeds from its upcoming Yep Roc 20 anniversary concerts on Oct. 20-21 at the Cat's Cradle in Hillsborough, North Carolina, featuring sets from Nick Lowe, Josh Rouse, Los Straitjackets, Eli "Paperboy" Reed, Jeremy & the Harlequins, Dressy Bessy, Dave Alvin & Phil Alvin with The Guilty Ones, Chuck Prophet and The Fleshtones. Go here to buy tickets.

They are the latest to join a long list of musicians and labels that have pledged generous donations to relief efforts, including Marshmello, who just wrote a $100,000 check to the American Red CrossSolange and Fall Out Boy, who are donating proceeds from upcoming shows to the cause, Edie Brickell and husband Paul Simon, who've pledged $1 million and a number of other acts have opened their wallets as well.

George Clooney, Beyoncé, Oprah Winfrey, Barbra Streisand and Reese Witherspoon are among the stars set to appear on the “Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Harvey Relief" broadcast, set for Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. ET. The all-star benefit organized by Houston rapper Bun B and manager Scooter Braun will air on all four major TV networks. Other organizations supporting those affected include AmeriCaresCatholic Charities, the Salvation Army and AABB.
