Sam Smith's comeback track is racing to No. 1 in the U.K.
The British singer’s “Too Good at Goodbyes” (Capitol) comfortably holds top spot on the midweek chart where it outpaces the second-ranked track, Dua Lipa's“New Rules” (Warner Bros) by a ratio of almost 2-to-1.
If the song stays at the top when the chart is published this Friday, it’ll be his sixth U.K. No. 1.
Written with longstanding collaborator Jimmy Napes and Stargate, “Too Good At Goodbyes” is the Londoner’s first release since 2015’s “Writing’s On The Wall” from Spectre, which became the first James Bond theme to hit No. 1 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart.
Meanwhile, Pink's “What About Us” (RCA) holds at No. 3 on the Official Chart Update, while Taylor Swift’s chart-topper "Look What You Made Me Do" (EMI) is expected to tumble to No. 4 while Zayn is chasing his third U.K. top 10 single as a solo artist with “Dusk Till Dawn” (RCA) featuring Sia. It’s currently at No. 5.
In the race for the albums chart title, The National has opened up a big lead with Sleep Well Beast (4AD). The American alternative rock outfit has an advantage of more than 6,000 combined sales over the next-best performer at the halfway stage, Nothing But Thieves' second album Broken Machine (RCA). If Sleep Well Beast snatches the top spot, it’ll mark the National’s first No. 1, eclipsing the No. 3 peak for 2013’s Trouble Will Find Me.
Also aiming high is Neil Young’s "lost" Hitchhiker (Reprise) album, which starts at No. 3 and is poised to become the veteran Canadian artist’s eighth top 10.
