Imagine Dragons Thunder Storms to No. 1 on Top TV Commercials Chart for August

Imagine Dragons' "Thunder" rules Billboard & Clio's Top TV Commercials chart, powered by Shazam, for August, thanks to the song's appearance in Microsoft Surface Laptop's "Powerfully Beautiful" ad.

"Thunder" is the second Imagine Dragons song to lead the Top TV Commercials chart in 2017, as prior single "Believer" topped the March ranking after its appearance in Nintendo's "Switch" commercial.

Using tagging data from Shazam, as well as sales and streaming information tracked by Nielsen Music, Billboard partners with Clio Music each month to present a chart ranking the top songs in commercials. Rankings exclude any song that has recently charted within the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 or top 10 on a genre chart.

"Thunder" hits a new peak on the latest Hot 100 (dated Sept. 30) at No. 40 (but is eligible for the August Top TV Commercials chart, since it was not then in the top 40) and spent four weeks at its No. 2 high on the Hot Rock Songschart beginning July 15. It leads all songs with 8,000 Shazam tags, 85,000 downloads sold and 27 million U.S. streams during August, according to Nielsen Music.

The track is the second single off the group's third studio album Evolve, which debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart (also July 15).

Just below Imagine Dragons on Top TV Commercials, Electric Light Orchestra's "Livin' Thing" debuts on a Billboard chart for the first time in 40 years. The song arrives at No. 2 after being featured in Volkswagen's "The New King" commercial.

The classic song peaked at No. 13 on the Hot 100 in 1977, but fueled by its feature in the Volkswagen ad, it debuted at No. 22 on the Rock Digital Song Saleschart dated Sept. 23, up 22 percent to 3,000 sold. The track was the originally lead single from ELO's 1976 album A New World Record, which hit No. 5 on the Billboard 200.

The track logged 25,000 Shazam tags, 9,000 downloads sold and 1.4 million U.S. streams in August.

Finally, The Youngbloods also enter Top TV Commercials with a song that originally scaled the Hot 100 decades earlier. The rock group's "Get Together" opens at No. 4 after its appearance in Walmart's "Many Chairs, One Table" ad. The track peaked at No. 5 on the Hot 100 in 1969, but aided by the commercial's buzz, it debuted on Hot Rock Songs at No. 20 and Rock Digital Song Sales at No. 6 (Sept. 16).

The song earned 16,000 Shazam tags, 11,000 downloads sold and 660,000 million U.S. streams in August.
