Amid reports of an allegedly "toxic" environment on the set of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, frequent guest Katy Perry has stepped up to offer her support to the embattled talk show host.
DeGeneres, once referred to as the "Queen of Nice," has not been implicated in any misconduct and took responsibility for what reportedly happened on her watch in a letter to her staff, but she's faced increasing pressure as allegations have surfaced about sexual misconduct and harassment, racism, intimidation and unjust termination on her watch.
Former Everybody Loves Raymond actor Brad Garrett tweeted last week that he "know[s] more than one who were treated horribly by her. Common knowledge," and Back to the Future star Lea Thompson tweeted in response "True story. It is," in claiming that the misconduct comes from the top.
Perry came to DeGeneres' defense in a tweet on Tuesday morning (Aug. 4), writing, "I know I can’t speak for anyone else’s experience besides my own but I want to acknowledge that I have only ever had positive takeaways from my time with Ellen & on the @theellenshow."
Perry added, "I think we all have witnessed the light & continual fight for equality that she has brought to the world through her platform for decades. Sending you love & a hug, friend."
Perry is one of a small handful of stars to speak out in support of DeGeneres so far.
Her tweets came just a few days after manager Scooter Braun tweeted, "People love to take shots. They love to see people fall. How quickly so many forget. How easy it is to stay quiet when it doesn’t effect them. @TheEllenShow is a kind, thoughtful, courageous human being who stands for what is right and highlights on her show the best of us. She has helped change the views for equality."
