Snap Partners With Discovery, Eurosport for Olympics Coverage

Social media company Snap has announced a content deal with Discovery Communications' Eurosport to develop and deliver made-for-mobile content for the Snapchat platform.

Discovery's pan-European sports channel Eurosport has signed a strategic advertising and content deal with Snap to deliver mobile-specific coverage of the Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang next year. Eurosport has European rights to the 2018 Olympics.

The deal marks the first time that Snap has committed to a European, multi-language deal covering the Olympics. The coverage will feature behind-the-scenes action from such Olympic events as snowboarding, downhill and freestyle skiing and ice hockey.

Snap said the partnership would be featured both on Snapchat's daily Our Stories, curated features with Snaps submitted by the platform's users, and Publisher Stories, the magazine-like productions made by media publishers, which Eurosport will curate. The original content accessible through Our Stories will be Olympic Games Snaps created by a dedicated team of editors at Snapchat, who will combine user content with Eurosport’s exclusive Olympic Games footage.

The Discovery deal follows Tuesday's announcement from Snap that it was setting up a joint venture with NBCUniversal to develop and produce original series for the Snapchat platform.

Snap and NBCUni, which will each control 50 percent of the new venture, have inked a first development deal with the Duplass Brothers’ creative shop, Donut.

NBC Entertainment veteran Lauren Anderson has taken the helm as the digital studio’s chief content officer. Previously, Anderson was senior vp of primetime programming at NBC where she developed or oversaw scripted series including Parks and Recreation and The Office. The series developed via the venture will debut on Snapchat's Shows feature, which presents long-form content, including repurposed programming like The Voice, in the platform's vertical format.
