Interscope Geffen A&M Records has promoted Joie Manda to executive vice president of the label group, Billboard has confirmed. As with his previous job, head of urban music at Interscope, Manda will continue to report to IGA chairman and CEO John Janick.
Manda jumped over to Interscope in March 2013 following a year working as president of Def Jam Records, also a subsidiary of Universal Music Group. Since arriving at Interscope, he has signed or worked with a number of artists, including Mike Will Made-It, Rae Sremmurd, Machine Gun Kelly, 6lack, Tory Lanez, Dreezy and Playboi Carti among others.
Notably, he orchestrated the 2014 partnership with J. Cole's Dreamville Records -- Cole told Billboard at the time that Manda saw the hip-hop superstar as a "Dr. Dre to his Jimmy Iovine." Manda also worked on partnerships with DJ Mustard and YG, and earlier this year he trademarked "Rule #1 Music" for a new venture.
“Joie has a great understanding of where music and culture is headed," Janick said in a statement. "He’s one step ahead. I’m thrilled to be able to give him the platform he deserves to continue to sign and develop artists across our entire company.”
Prior to joining the UMG family, Manda served as head of urban music for Warner Bros. Records, where he worked closely with Jill Scott, Common and Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group, among others. Before that, he was evp of Asylum Records when it was resurrected in 2014.
