Tom Mackay Named President of Sony Music Film and TV A&R

Tom Mackay joins Sony Music Entertainment as the president of Sony music, film and television A&R, a newly created position, which will be based in Los Angeles. He will report to Sony Music Entertainment CEO Rob Stringer.

In this new role, Mackay will be responsible for leading strategy and implementation of Sony Music’s film and television partnerships, including its soundtrack deals. Prior to joining Sony Mackay had been at Republic Records since 1998, most recently as executive VP/GM of West Coast operations. He was responsible for the label's film and television initiatives, as well as signing and developing new acts.

“Tom is a wonderfully accomplished executive who understands how to create connections between music, film and television," Stringer said in a statement. "We are delighted that he is joining Sony Music to help us as we look to create new opportunities for artists through innovation and growth in our visual entertainment initiatives.”

Mackay is expected to work closely with the Sony Music labels to exploit their content and drive revenue and maximize opportunities across film and TV platforms.

" Representing Sony Music’s iconic labels and artists across the entire film and television landscape is a tremendous honor and responsibility,"Mackay said in a statement. " I look forward to working alongside everyone within the Sony Music family in creating new and exciting opportunities for our artists in this medium.”

At Republic, Mackay was involved in the introduction and launching of "The Voice," on NBC; and the music released in conjunction with the show via that label. He was also involved in such film and TV soundtrack projects as "“Fifty Shades of Grey,” “Fifty Shades Darker,” “The Hunger Games,”  “The Walking Dead,” “Muscle Shoals,” “Sing Street,”  “Beat Bugs” and “Motown Magic!” among others, according to the announcement.

On the A&R side, Mackay helped sign and oversee Florida Georgia Line, Eli Young Band, 3 Doors Down and Hinder, according to the Sony press release on his appointment.

The news comes just days after Doug Morris stepped down as Sony Music CEO on April 1 and Stringer ascended to his job. The announcement may portend further executive changes at Sony Music.
