German Label Giegling Faces Backlash After Founder Konstantin Says Women Usually Worse DJs Than Men

German DJ and Giegling label boss Konstantin is in hot water over comments he made to German magazine Groove. He was quoted as saying women are “usually worse DJs than men,” a comment that was covered by Mixmag and other dance music publications.

Konstantin responded to Mixmag with a direct statement that claimed that what was supposed to be a dark joke had been taken out of context. His full statement reads as follows:

"I feel deeply sorry about the words that have been printed. These words are not a direct quote and are in my opinion misleading. I actually learned to DJ from my friend Sarah and of course I don't think women are worse DJs than men. I completely regret what was said in that private conversation with the journalist where she did not appreciate my bad sense of humor and my habit of taking opposite positions to challenge people, even if it sometimes goes way beyond my own opinion. What was written does not reflect my opinion nor is it at all anything other people from the label would ever say or feel. I accept the journalist's point on the boy's club. But we want women to be involved and we were always trying to involve women in our action."

Billboard Dance has reached out to Giegling for comment.

Despite his attempt to clear the air, Giegling and Konstantin were dropped from London's Sunfall Festival. The label was scheduled to host night sessions at the event, whose organizers addressed the controversy in a Facebook post.

Fellow DJ and noted equality advocate The Black Madonna had shared some words on the subject via Twitter.

So, I'll read the article but last week Konsti said and I quote "You're a feminist? You might not want to be around me. I'm a chauvinist."

I honestly thought he was kidding. It was so over the top. I hugged him. Didn't even register as relevant.
