Lorde Leaps to Top Five on Billboard Artist 100

The singer-songwriter blasts 95-3, third-biggest jump in the chart's history. Plus, Bruno Mars returns to No. 1.

Lorde skyrockets 92 positions on the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated July 8) to a new peak of No. 3, powered by the arrival of her sophomore studio album Melodrama, which debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 109,000 equivalent album units in the week ending June 22, according to Nielsen Music.

The Artist 100, which launched in July 2014, measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.

Lorde's 92-position jump ties for the third-largest single-week upward movement in the Artist 100's brief history. The 1975 holds the record for the biggest vault: 95 positions, from No. 100 to No. 5, on the March 19, 2016, chart. In second place, Shawn Mendes soared 93 spots (95-2) on May 2, 2015. Lorde matches the 92-rung surge by Gorillaz just seven weeks earlier (94-2; May 20).

Album sales contribute the majority of Lorde's Artist 100 points (86 percent), as she makes a 769 percent increase in overall activity.

Bruno Mars returns to No. 1 on the Artist 100 (3-1), to become the top musical act in the U.S. for a fourth total week, having first led the list dated Dec. 10, 2016. (He'd last topped the June 17-dated chart.) Mars has spent the most time in the tally's top five (26 weeks out of 27 total) of any act in 2017.

Among other Artist 100 moves, 2 Chainz re-enters to a new high of No. 6, as his latest album, Pretty Girls Like Trap Music, debuts at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 106,000 units. Plus, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit debut at No. 12 on the Artist 100 sparked by their new album The Nashville Sound (a No. 4 new entry on the Billboard 200), while Fleet Foxes bow at No. 30 on the Artist 100, as their new set Crack-Up starts at No. 9 on the Billboard 200.
