Tyler, The Creator encouraged his young fans to "pull up" to the polls come this November for the presidential election, which will mark the rapper's first time voting.
In a two-minute video posted to his Instagram TV and Twitter on Monday (Sept. 28), the Grammy-winning artist expressed how crucial it is for millennials and Gen Z-ers, who make up 37% of the eligible voting population in America, according to Brookings Institute, to participate in their civic duty. Tyler also posted a link to Rock the Vote, a nonprofit campaign that helps young Americans register to vote. Rock the Vote partnered with Converse, which the rapper frequently collaborates with on sneaker collections.
"I know I'm the last person y'all should ever take advice from, but I'm reiterating what everyone else is saying. Please, please if you are young and your f---ing back don't hurt, go to them polls and cast the f---ing vote," he pleaded. "And I didn't give a f--- about none of this sh-- just like a lot of y'all. This is actually going to be my first time voting. But I see the light."
The Igor star reminded his followers of how quick they were to digitally protest during the resurgent Black Lives Matter movement this summer, including the viral black squares that were posted to Instagram as part of Blackout Tuesday. Now, Tyler says they need to "pull up" for the issues they truly care about.
He listed and alluded to some issues he cares most about protecting, including more art and music programs and revamped curriculums in schools. "I have female friends who need certain things... and I like being able to f--- on and marry whoever the f--- I want at any given moment. If we want to keep some of those options, then we have to start somewhere," he noted. "If we want any of that, then y'all know what to do."
