What Is the Buss It Challenge?

It's a new year, and a new dance challenge has already taken over TikTok, thanks to up-and-coming Texas rapper Erica Banks.

The 1501 Certified rapper's hit single "Buss It" from her self-titled debut album soundtracks the challenge of the same name, but TikTok users might've thought it was Nelly behind the curtains because of the song's first line: "Checkin' your reflection and tellin' your best friend/ Like, 'Girl, I think my butt gettin' big.'" The Dallas native samples his 2002 No. 1 hit "Hot in Herre" at the beginning of her song, which plays in the first half of the video challenge.

The "Buss It" challenge requires participants to look busted while wearing no makeup and average home clothes during Nelly's line for the first video, before the follow-up clip shows them dropping it down low and twerking to Banks' heavy trap chorus while dressed up with a full face makeup. For anyone with serious knee issues, you might want to get creative to avoid any extra strain on them.

Artists including Monica, Rico Nasty and DaniLeighhave done the "Buss It" challenge, which Banks reposted on her Instagram account. The first person to kick it off, however, was 18-year-old Erika Davila, who challenged fellow TikTok users on Jan. 1 to make the same twerking transition as she did once the "Buss It" chorus hits, "but all prettied up," according to the text on her video, which has received 14.8 million views so far.

Banks released "Buss It" in in June 2020. It first appeared on the Billboard charts in August, when the song debuted at No. 38 on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, and later peaked to No. 36 the following month. "Buss It" got 1.7 million U.S. streams in the week of Jan. 1-7, according to MRC Data, which is up 310% from 400,000 in the week before (Dec. 25-Dec. 31).
