Morgan Blackwell, an Arizona-based artist, is all about music—from singing and songwriting to mixing and producing—and even creates artwork for his singles. His music can best be described as indie or alternative pop, yet he occasionally dabbles across genres.
In the middle of June, Morgan Blackwell dropped his newest single, “Human Girl,” which reflects on “the new age of dating and trying to relate to younger people.” According to Blackwell, “A lot of time I go on dates with women, and it’s hard to understand them. I feel like an alien sometimes.” At the same time, he reveals that the song isn’t too serious; in fact, it’s meant to be an uplifting song. “It’s that song you listen to when you’re having a good time, but it’s also about love,” says the artist of the song he wrote two years prior to its release.
Morgan Blackwell is a self-taught musician. From singing to writing to creating artwork, the artist has learned many crafts through trial and error and intentional study. “I catch myself humming things. Then I record those hums and finally, in the studio, I’ll listen to those recordings and see if I can put a tune to them or put a lyric to them, depending what comes first,” explains Blackwell of his songwriting process. Sometimes, his process is so efficient that he completes an entire song in a few days, like “De Ja Vu,” which was finalized in three days and became one of his hit songs.
While Blackwell is excited to get out there and perform his music to live fans, he admits to having had stage fright as a child and still encountering it today. “I would literally shake onstage—it’s bad. The thing I’m proudest of is doing open mics. I’m putting myself out there.”
Later this year, Morgan Blackwell is excited to release additional music he’s been working on including two acoustic singles and one collaboration. At the end of the day, he would like people to know that it’s okay to reach out. “I wish I could have more conversations with people. A lot of people will write me off before they get to talk to me or anything,” shares Blackwell. So if you see him at a show, be sure to say hi.
