Normani Talks Going Solo, Fifth Harmonys Hiatus at 2018 Billboard Music Awards

Normani took some time to catch up with Billboard’s Chelsea Briggs on the red carpet at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (May 20), discussing her collaboration with Khalid and Fifth Harmony’s hiatus.

Normani, who is performing “Love Lies” with Khalid at the show, says that she prepared by listening to Gospel music this morning. “It’s a Sunday, it’s a beautiful Sunday, I’m in Vegas. I get to perform with one of my best friends. Life’s good,” she says. “Honestly, it’s just so surreal. I think that this is his, probably [Khalid’s] first time performing at Billboard, as well as mine as a solo artist. I’m not used to not having my girls next to me, but I know that they’re with me in spirit.”

The singer also weighs in on her group’s hiatus, explaining that Fifth Harmony have been together for six years, so that to now be a solo artist with all eyes on her, “It’s definitely something that you have to get used to.”

“But I think that everything that we’ve done,” she continues, “Especially considering I didn’t even know those girls existed six years ago, so everything that we accomplished, I don’t think it should be anything sad. It’s not a disappointment.”

The singer also hints at new music, revealing that it will feature “a lot of dope collaborations” and that she “may be the only vocal.”

After wrapping things up, Kelly Clarkson crashes the interview to praise Normani’s dress rehearsal performance. “I’m sorry, Ms. Thing, but your performance,” Clarkson tells her. “You sound beautiful, you look amazing. It’s great – you and Khalid. Woo! I’m so glad I don’t have to perform after you!”
