Prince and the Revolution's classic 1984 Purple Rain soundtrack makes a splash on Billboard's album charts this week following its deluxe remastered reissue on June 23.
The former Billboard 200-topping album, which spent 24 weeks atop the list in 1984 and 1985 and also re-entered the top five in May 2016, re-enters the Billboard 200 at No. 4 with 52,000 equivalent album units earned (48,000 in traditional album sales) in the tracking week ending June 29, according to Nielsen Music. The set collected a 3,633 percent gain in units for the week and a 4,767 percent leap in album sales.
Purple Rain also re-enters the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart at No. 3, its highest peak in 32 years. It previously spent 19 weeks atop the ranking in 1984 (and had last appeared on the chart in 1985 until this week). Additionally, the soundtrack debuts at No. 1 on the R&B Albums chart and re-enters the Vinyl Albums chart at No. 1, with 6,000 vinyl copies sold (up 1,492 percent).
Purple Rain is the first Prince album to be remastered and reissued, and was released in a variety of formats, including a 20-track deluxe edition with unreleased bonus tracks and a 35-track expanded edition with additional B-sides, rarities and a live DVD of the Purple Rain Tour from 1985.
