Lorde Covers Whitney Houston to Celebrate Australia Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage

Lorde covered Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” at her Sydney show on Tuesday (Nov. 21) to celebrate Australia's legalization of same-sex marriage.

“I’m very proud of you,” the Kiwi star said while the piano continued to play in the background. “This is the crying show. I don’t know if you know that.”

According to CNN, statistics released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that 61 percent of the nation voted in favor of same-sex marriage while 38 percent voted against. Approximately 79.5 percent of the population took part in the survey.

As Lorde held onto a rainbow flag, her slow-building rendition of Houston’s song added some gravity to the bubbly classic.

The New Zealand native is the latest singer to cover the “I Will Always Love You” singer. Christina Aguilera paid tribute to the icon at the American Music Awards on Sunday. Lorde has three upcoming Australia shows in Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne.
