Latin rapper and emerging artist Zack Steam is making waves this spring with his latest single, “Orange and wine.” “It’s like a summer song that has electricity. You feel a chill but it has spicy lyrics,” says the artist of his latest release.
This new single follows up “Someone new,” featuring Kate Red, and released in February 2022. Both songs are part of the upcoming album “Astronaut Emotions,” which features additional songs like “No one’s gonna fly” and “High as a rocket.” The young artist speaks to the brokenhearted through messages of being rejected and a fighter—all while struggling through heartbreak.
Born in Guatemala City, Zack Steam is looking to build audiences across the globe. His single “Someone new” garnered over 1.2 million views on TikTok in just one month following its release earlier this year. Zack Steam has ongoing support from college music stations across the U.S. including Eagle Air, Kutztown station, and WKNC. Across the pond, European (and even Japanese) radio stations and blogs have shown support as the young artist builds an international reputation for himself.
From a young age, Zack Steam was in love with music. The artist performed in the church his parents attended, despite not being fully committed to the religion itself. During this time, the youthful Zack learned to play guitar through the National Conservatory of Guatemala, following in the path of many guitar masters. By age ten, the dreamer was making plans to become a legend. By learning piano and bass, Zack Steam quickly developed music-making skills that would set him apart from the competition.
Flash forward to age 20, when Zack’s sister, Kate Red, spurred a family project to finance their music-making abilities through the purchase of production equipment. While neither artist wanted to live in the shadow of the other, the brother and sister duo got together for “Someone new” and otherwise flew solo for the start of their music careers.
When it comes to creating his signature sound, the artist writes first. “I start playing the piano alone in my room, playing progressions. When I find one I like, I do the same with another instrument. Sometimes I already have a catch line for the lyrics, so I try to include that line in the song,” says the artist of his creative process.
“Orange and wine” was a single born out of spontaneity. While taking a shower, some of the lyrics came to him so quickly that Zack jumped out to grab his phone and put the chorus down in his notes. The rest is, as they say, history. Out May 12, the single will precede its video which will be released at a later date.
“I want people to enjoy it,” says Zack Steam of his latest single. “It’s a chill beat you can hear while you’re driving to the beach.”
