You did the work: you wrote the songs, recorded them, and released them. You built a network and fanbase. You practiced what a live performance would look like. Now you have a collection of songs ready to go and nowhere to perform them. What’s next? It’s time to plan yourself a music gig!
How to make a gig
When planning your next (or first) music gig, it’s important to consider your goals. Are you looking for an intimate, heart-to-heart with close fans? Are you trying to play to large audiences to build your fanbase? These questions must be considered in order to take the first step—picking your venue.
If this is your first event, think locally. What are places in your neighborhood and community that encourage artists to perform? Do you frequent any bars with a live show space? Research your venue options and local promoters to know how to prepare.
Take your promo package (you’ll need this to showcase your talents) and start introducing yourself to venues and promoters. Find out what the venue requires from performers. Do you need a permit? How much does it cost to rent? Also, what does the venue provide in the way of amplifiers and sound systems? Does it provide advanced seating or general admission? Is security included? Insurance? A sound engineer?
Be sure to consider all of the pros and cons of your preferred space before committing to a show.
Planning your concert
Now you have your venue…so what’s next? Give yourself time to prepare.
Once your personal preparation is in order, start spreading the word about your upcoming gig. Get friends and fans excited so that they also help spread the word. Sell as many tickets as you can. Don’t be afraid to send a few freebies to influencers and network folk that might help you along the way.
Plan the set time. Are you the only artist/band performing? Make sure to schedule in extra time for setting up and taking down between sets.
Stay organized. Keep all of your planning notes in one place. Pay attention to deadlines and any deposits needed for equipment and the venue.
With so many moving parts, it will be stressful at some point, but just keep your head up and remember that the best part is yet to come—performing!
