Lizzo has unveiled her new album Bitch, embracing a word that has often been used negatively and transforming it into a symbol of empowerment.
The singer, who famously proclaimed “I’m 100 per cent that bitch” on her breakout 2017 hit Truth Hurts, explained that the album's title reflects the way she has reclaimed the term and made it her own.
According to Lizzo, the word “bitch” now represents confidence and self belief. She pointed to artists such as Meredith Brooks and Missy Elliott as examples of musicians who have used the term in an uplifting and empowering way throughout their careers.
She said: “Reclaiming the word Bitch is power - it’s taking a label once used to diminish women and turning it into a declaration of confidence, and unapologetic self-love. So many incredible women in music have used the word for positivity like Meredith Brooks and Missy Elliot. It was only fitting to name my album Bitch because it has become my favorite word when using it on my own terms and because I am 100 per cent that bitch!”
Lizzo recently revealed that she previously spent a great deal of time second guessing her lyrics because she worried about how listeners might react to them. However, she now feels much more secure in her own voice and perspective.
She told Rolling Stone: "I said, 'I will never ever, ever, ever, ever be a side chick' in the original [of Truth Hurts]. And then I was like, 'Mm, but what if I offend side chicks?' And so I was like, 'I will never ever, ever, ever, ever be your side chick.'
"I always overthink these things because I know who’s consuming my music and I’m very [concerned about] how they’re going to feel, how it’s going to affect them."
Elsewhere, Lizzo recently addressed claims that she had been critical of Taylor Swift.
The 38 year old performer firmly rejected suggestions that she had ever spoken negatively about the 36 year old superstar, stressing that she does not make a habit of attacking fellow artists.
The discussion began after an X user compared Taylor's latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, with Lizzo's 2025 mixtape.
The post read: "The Life Of A Showgirl + MY FACE HURTS FROM SMILING - 4.005M. ICEMAN + MAID OF HONOUR + HABIBTI - 683k. (sic)"
After seeing the post, Lizzo reposted it and asked followers what it was referring to.
The chart topping artist wrote: "Can someone explain what this means?"
A user then replied, claiming that "it means all that s*** talking you did about Tay finally caught up to you".
Lizzo quickly pushed back against the accusation, making it clear that she has never targeted Taylor Swift or any other musician.
She wrote on the micro blogging platform: "Are you well? First of all I have never talked s*** about Taylor Swift - also while we on the subject I’ve never talked s*** about any artist. Just because I mention an artist by name does not mean I’m talking s*** - grow tf up pls. (sic)"
