Two decades before Taylor Swift’s “The Fate of Ophelia” came to life, a character named Napoleon Dynamite (played by Jon Heder) was already winning hearts with his brilliantly awkward dance moves in the 2004 coming-of-age comedy Napoleon Dynamite. His unforgettable routine was initially set to Jamiroquai’s “Canned Heat,” but for anyone who hasn’t seen the movie and happens to stumble upon the viral “Ophelia” x Napoleon Dynamite fan edit, it would be easy to believe the choreography was made for Swift’s 2025 single instead, because the pairing works almost flawlessly.
The hilarious mashup was posted by @betterspiritsprintco on Instagram on Friday (Oct. 3), the same day Swift released her twelfth studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, which is already breaking records. As of Sunday, the post has been liked more than 63,000 times.
The caption simply reads: “how it feels to listen to the fate of ophelia.” Judging by the comments, fans couldn’t agree more.
The edit features Napoleon’s iconic dance scene, this time set to the sound of “The Fate of Ophelia,” the opening track and lead single from Showgirl. The song, which became the first from the album to receive an official music video, debuted online Sunday after premiering in theaters during The Release Party of a Showgirl, a box office success in its own right.
The synchronicity between the visuals and the music is uncanny. Every move lands perfectly, and even the subtle audience reactions feel tailor-made for Swift’s track.
Wait until the part where Napoleon grooves to the line “I swore my loyalty to me, myself, and I”, it’s pure magic.
