TUSCALOOSA, AL - Jay G is new to the hip-hop scene, and his debut EP, “Life Before Fame,” provides a glimpse into an artist who is going to find success in the industry.
“I’m rapping about experiences in life, but I don’t want people falling victim to that type of lifestyle. I want to differentiate myself. I want to be better than what my music says,” explained Jay G. “You don’t have to be a product of your environment.”
After a turbulent childhood, Jay G is serious about differentiating himself from other artists, especially those from the south. Void of the Alabama sound, Jay G incorporates different switches and transitions to keep his raps fresh. With his debut EP, Jay G uses aggressive rap to convey his message, focusing on his city and what he sees that affect his daily life. But he warns the bold style of rap on “Life Before Fame” is not all the rapper has to offer.
“I like melodic beats and can be very versatile than just doing aggressive rap,” he said. “I’m not downplaying the EP; I just know I got a lot of room to grow.”
Jay G can perform various hip-hop styles, committed to developing his musical acumen. He is working on developing more decisive verses and messages. His flow can become smooth, but his debut EP is a mere sample of his abilities. In working with a producer who specializes in aggressive rap, Jay G opted to make “Life Before Fame” to introduce himself to the industry. As an independent artist, he plans to develop into a more rounded rapper.
Dropping on Feb. 11, “Life Before Fame” contains four tracks. Getting rave reviews is “Stackin,” a song he performed with his friend and fellow rapper Xero. Focusing on the dangers of living in his city, Tuscaloosa, Jay G pays homage to those who have fallen to violence. Jay G works the song like a pro with an upbeat tempo and methodic raps, giving fans a preview of his hidden talents.
A song destined to be a fan favorite is “Let It Go,” with its upbeat and motivational delivery. “In this song, I’m trying to tell people that I’m overcoming my obstacles and becoming the best person I can be. I am avoiding hate, and everyone needs to stay out of the way,” he said.
Continuing to define his artistry, Jay G is working on an LP slated to contain 15-20 songs. Vowing to expand his style, he said the unnamed project would display his rapping versatility and feature melodic lyrics, witty wordplay, and multiple flows. Taking inspiration from Tupac, Polo G, and Kendrick Lamar Jay G said, “I want to show my versatility cuz I don’t want to be known for one type of sound. I don’t want to be labeled as the person who made the same sound with my second project.”
