How to Make Money on YouTube as a Musician

Make Money on YouTube as a Musician

In principle, it sounds easy - upload a video and make money. However, just like everything in life, you need to take quite a few steps before the bucks start rolling in.

Before embarking on your YouTube advertising journey, pause and ponder the myriad of YouTube monetization. Below are a few things to consider and an overview of financial opportunities await musicians on YouTube. Consult YouTube for specific rules and regulations before taking the leap.

Click On the Ads

Unfortunately, there is no quick path to financial freedom by monetizing YouTube videos. As your channel becomes more successful with visitors, you increase your opportunity to make more money.

But getting views and likes is not enough.

Your subscribers need to click on the ads, which translates to other brands wanting to advertise on your site. Advertisers are not going to give you money. They only pay for ads that people watch. So, if the majority of your viewers skip the ads, don’t expect a windfall from YouTube.

Show Me the Money

According to 2022 statistics, the average rate an advertiser pays per view varies. Musicians can expect to see $0.10 to $0.30 per view, with the average being $0.18 per view.

Crunching the numbers, a YouTube channel receives around $18 per 1,000 ad views. This equals $3 to $5 per 1,000 video views.

Sounds confusing, right?

Let’s break this down further.

If you want to earn $5k a month from YouTube, you need to collect 300k to 1.25 million views during a month. Of course, this number can vary depending on other factors, such as affiliate marketing and merch sales, but it will take thousands of views as a rule of thumb.

Most importantly, a viewer needs to watch at least half of the advertising video or 30 seconds to be counted as a view - which translates into payment.

One Million Equals Success

Currently, more than 2k YouTube channels have amassed one million subscribers. Of course, after putting in the hard work to reach this milestone, life gets easier.

Aside from being considered as an influential YouTuber in your specific niche, advertisers will begin to reach out to you. Everyone wants to be with a winner, and advertisers are no different.

Path to Riches

YouTube success is not going to happen overnight. Remember, YouTube ignores viewers who click Skip Ad. Even if the viewer likes the video, clicking Skip Ad equals zero dollars income for your video.

Try this: Surf through YouTube and notice how many channels have more than one million subscribers. Artists like Rihanna and Justin Bieber top the list. Be prepared for the long haul. You will not get rich off YouTube after posting your first few videos.

But YouTube can provide an excellent way to grow your fanbase and increase your popularity worldwide while making some money. Just don’t expect to become a millionaire overnight with a viral video.
