T'Myh B Makes Falling in Love Fun Again with Latest Single ‘Honey’

Singer and songwriter Tamiyah Alexis Brown—known as T'Myh B—is doubling down on love with an upbeat single about taking the first step. “Honey” showcases T'Myh B’s powerhouse vocals paired with her ability to bring words to life.

Born Tamiyah, T’Myh B incorporated her stage name as a reflection of who she aimed to be. “I picked a name at first that was a mashup of my middle name and first name,” she explains. “But that name didn’t feel right. So, I started to think about who I wanted to be as an artist. I want to be myself. I don’t have to change my name and be somebody new—I’ll simply be T’Myh B. Be with a dot. Just be.” This is the message T’Myh B hopes to send to listeners through her art: just be yourself.

Growing up in Alabama, T’Myh B was very shy, yet she mustered the courage to sing in the church choir with her mother and aunt. “We always sung acapella. I started singing background and blossomed into singing solos,” she adds. “From there, I grew into taking piano lessons in high school.”

Pursuing music wasn’t where T’Myh B saw her life going at that point. In fact, she had her eyes set on being a nurse. “Nursing didn’t bring me fulfillment,” shares T’Myh B. “So, I started writing songs. Originally, I wanted to be a ghost writer and write from the perspective of other artists. But then I shared my music with my friends and family, and they said, ‘you need to sing your own stuff.’ I countered that I didn’t want to sing in front of people… but then one day, I wrote a song from the heart.”

What happened next was a collaboration with a friend who invited T’Myh B to record at a proper studio. The only person who was surprised at the outcome was T’Myh B herself--everyone else knew she had it in her. “I shocked myself, really,” she jokes about the experience.

From that point on, T’Myh B began investing in her craft, writing more songs. “I grew my lyricism. My voice got better. It just grew from there. My passion grew, my love grew, my enthusiasm grew,” shares T’Myh B. Blending R&B/soul, hip-hop, and pop elements, T’Myh B perfected her own sound.

“Honey” is T’Myh B’s latest single. The song originates from being in love and all the emotions that follow. “I was in love at the time,” shares T’Myh B of her songwriting. “All my music comes from experience and the things I’ve been through. It’s a release of emotions. I was in love and wanted to write a story.” While searching for the beat to convey those emotions, T’Myh B stumbled upon one called “Honey,” and the single unfolded before her.

“I played off the word ‘honey.’ The lyrics came to be because I wanted to expand on that and write from a girl’s perspective of her telling the guy. You always see a man approaching a girl. But this does something different. It’s about feeling good. You can be the girl, or you can be the guy. It doesn’t matter—approach him or her. You can be the person to approach.”

T’Myh B hopes “Honey” will make listeners feel good about being in love—maybe they’ll even have the courage to go up and talk to the person they feel a connection with. “I want them to be inspired by love,” adds T’Myh B. “We often hear sad love songs but not ones that lift you up.”

The artist’s approach to songwriting is fairly standard. First, T’Myh B sources a beat and (hopefully) find one that sparks an emotion. In the case of “Honey,” the instrumentals gave T’Myh B a good feeling. The songwriting came naturally. “It just flowed,” adds T’Myh B. “One word made it all flow. I feel like it’s important to pick beats like that—the story comes to you. I didn’t pick the story; it came to me.” Working alongside her producer, Mali, T’Myh B finalized the song shortly after.

At the end of the day, T'Myh B wants the world to know that music is her passion, her release, her therapy. She hopes that by sharing her music with the world, her music can help someone the way the music of other artists helped her.
