Miley Cyrus Blasts Back to Top 10 on Social 50 Chart, Logic Returns After VMAs

Miley Cyrus blasts into Billboard’s Social 50 chart’s top 10 dated Sept. 16 (rising 11-4) after a week that saw the pop singer star in a new episode of Apple Music’s Carpool Karaoke: The Series and help raise money for victims of Hurricane Harvey.

The Social 50 is powered by data tracked by music analytics company Next Big Sound and ranks the most popular artists on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Wikipedia and Tumblr. The chart's methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views and engagement. The chart’s latest tracking week ended Aug. 31

Cyrus appeared in the Aug. 29 episode of Carpool Karaoke with other members of the Cyrus family, previewing the episode on social media with a clip of the Cyruses performing patriarch Billy Ray Cyrus’ 1992 No. 4 Billboard Hot 100 hit “Achy Breaky Heart” on Instagram.

The singer also discussed the donations her Happy Hippie Foundation would be making to victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas through Aug. 30, writing on Instagram that she and the foundation had donated $500,000 of their own money to the relief fund.

According to Next Big Sound, Cyrus earned 20.1 million Instagram reactions and 188,000 Twitter reactions in the tracking week, both up percentages of more than 200 percent. The bump in chart metrics helped Cyrus, who has led the Social 50 for 21 weeks since its 2011 inception but not since 2014, jump 11-4 on the chart, marking her best chart position since reaching No. 4 toward the beginning of summer (June 24).

Two big re-entries populate the chart below Cyrus, led by Logic, who re-enters the Social 50 at No. 19, making the ranking for the first time since the chart dated May 27 and achieving his best peak yet after previously rising to No. 30 (May 20).

The rapper’s rise coincides with a big evening at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 27, during which Logic performed his suicide awareness/prevention hit “1-800-273-8255” (which concurrently becomes his first top 10 on the latest Hot 100, leaping 29-9).

Logic earned 3.5 million Instagram reactions and added 293,000 new followers on the service (the latter a 590 percent boost) as he posted photos and video stills from the award ceremony that included a selfie with Ellen DeGeneres. “Today I performed at the VMA’s,” he wrote. “Won a Moon Man Award. And Ellen wanted to take a selfie with Me! What is Life?!?!”

And at No. 27, Michael Jackson re-enters for the second time in 2017. Previously, the late pop star made the July 15-dated chart at No. 35 following renewed interest in Jackson (as well as posthumous posts on his social media) on the eight-year anniversary of his death June 25. This time around, the reasoning was less dreary: what would have been Jackson’s 59th birthday on Aug. 29. Though primarily driven by Wikipedia views (559,000, up 67 percent), Jackson’s chart metrics also included 33,000 Twitter mentions and 17,000 Twitter reactions.
