Ed Sheerans Shape of You Hits One Billion Plays on Spotify

Ed Sheeran has just crossed into rarified territory. As of Thursday (June 8), the singer's "Shape of You" single has officially hit the one billion plays mark on Spotify, becoming just one of a handful of songs that have reached that high peak. At press time the single from the singer's Divide album -- which recently became the first song to spent its first 20 weeks on the Hot 100 in the top five -- had 1,000,042,405 plays, easily making it his most popular Spotify track to date.

Spotify confirms that the only other songs that have racked up a billi on the streaming service are Drake's "One Dance" -- which was the first to hit the mark in December 2016 (and currently has 1,237,486,042) -- followed by The Chainsmokers' "Closer," which has 1,021,620,926 spins so far. The next song likely to join the club could be Major Lazer's "Lean On," which is nipping at Ed's heels with over 991,000,000 plays so far.
