Muse is reliving its Simulation Theory Tour days by bringing them to the silver screen.
MUSE - Simulation Theory: The IMAX Experience will be available in select IMAX theaters around the world next Monday, Aug. 17 before coming to iTunes, Amazon and Google Play starting next Friday, Aug. 21.
Directed by Lance Drake, who shot every promo video for the English rock band's 2018 album by the same name, the sci-fi concert film-narrative film hybrid was filmed at London's O2 Arena in September 2019 and follows a team of scientists investigating the source of a paranormal contagion around the world in efforts to save humanity, which sounds eerily familiar to the coronavirus pandemic. The Simulation Theory movie also features 22 songs and the never-before-heard score from Muse's tour that hit 28 countries from February to October 2019.
"The goal for Simulation Theory was to capture the scale of the electrifying live show and to expand upon its connection to the DNA of the world we built for the past three years in music videos for Muse," Drake said in a statement. "In a strange turn, the film's alternate reality eerily started to mirror our own."
Muse gave viewers a glimpse into the supernatural spectacle Tuesday (Aug. 11) by releasing the official trailer. Tickets to the cutting-edge IMAX Experience are available for pre-order here. Only fans in the U.S., Canada, U.K., France, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Mongolia, Norway, and Germany can catch the flick in theaters, which will abide by government COVID-19 safety guidelines.
Additionally, two limited-edition '80s-inspired box sets for Simulation Theory will be available on Muse's website and in retail stores Dec. 11. Both sets include a multicolored LP with selections from the band’s 02 Arena performance in 2019, a VHS-like box containing an HD 5.1 DTS Master AudioBlu-Ray of the film, and a fluorescent pink cassette of the film score written by lead singer Matt Bellamy. Muse also partnered with Marvel Comics to create a custom Simulation Theory comic book and limited-edition poster in celebration of the release, which are included in both sets.
