What to Expect When Hiring a Music PR Agency

If you’re an independent or up-and-coming music artist, promoting yourself and your music is pivotal to growing your fanbase and increasing your brand awareness.

Most artists start this process on their own with social media accounts and word-of-mouth promotion among friends and family. But if you want to take your career to the next level, hiring a music promotion company is a key step.

If you haven’t worked with a music PR company before, you’re probably wondering what to expect – and how, exactly, online music promotion works. Many companies offer several different music PR packages to choose from. These can be geared toward independent or up-and-coming artists, or designed for those signed to major labels. Many of these packages serve both groups in similar ways.

What is a PR Package?

So, what is a PR package, and how can it help you? First, for those who don’t know, PR means public relations. Music PR, specifically, is designed to promote an artist’s brand, music and live performances. If you’ve got an upcoming release or just want to tell your story as an artist, a music PR package is worth looking into because it will generate media exposure and get your music into the ears of a lot of new fans.

There are a lot of different music PR packages out there, and that gives artists a lot of options. Maybe you want to focus on social media promotion and grow your audience on platforms like TikTok and Twitter. Maybe you want to do a virtual press conference that can reach millions of potential fans in a matter of hours. Maybe you want to get interviews on the radio and stories in trusted industry magazines and blogs, or have someone craft a professional press release announcing your exciting news. There’s obviously a lot more a music PR company can offer, but we’ll talk about these options for now.

Boost Your Social Media Presence

One big way these companies can promote you and your music on social media and streaming platforms (like Spotify) is by using influencers – those people with huge amounts of followers. If someone has a huge following on TikTok, or creates Spotify playlists that everyone listens to, it’s obviously a huge boost to get them talking about, and including, your music.

Virtual Press Conferences

What about a virtual press conference? Here’s how that works: a music PR company will work with its partners in media to craft questions about whatever it is you’re promoting, then you’ll get access to the PR company’s social media accounts – which often have huge followings – and those media partners (who also usually have huge followings) will direct their questions to you. You get to answer them in real time, with potentially hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of people taking notice.

Press Coverage

A lot of packages also offer you the chance to get your story told, and your music promoted, in the industry’s trusted magazines and blogs. This means you get to be featured in publications like Hip Hop Weekly, SMASH Magazine, MTV Next and SXSW Pop. A publicist from the PR company will contact you for an interview about whatever it is you want to promote; they’ll gather valuable insights into you and your music and then write a story (or press release). You’ll get a chance to look it over and give the green light to proceed, or you can request changes if there’s something you’re not quite satisfied with.
