The Whitlams Set Return to Rock Island Australian Tour Dates

The Whitlams Set Return to Rock Island Australian Tour Dates

The Whitlams are set to return to their favourite pub venues this October, announcing the Return to Rock Island tour — a nine date East Coast run that frontman Tim Freedman says will be “wildly different” from their recently completed Orchestral ’26 shows.

The tour kicks off on Oct. 2 at Hotel Brunswick in Brunswick Heads, before heading through Coffs Harbour, then two night runs at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel, Sydney’s Metro Theatre and Brisbane’s The Triffid, along with a stop at Wombarra Bowlo on Oct. 18. William Crighton and his band will support every date. Presale tickets open Tuesday, June 23 at 10 a.m. local time via thewhitlams.com.

The announcement arrives shortly after the conclusion of the band’s Orchestral ’26 tour, which wrapped on June 13 after sold out performances across venues including Sydney’s State Theatre, Brisbane’s QPAC, Newcastle’s Civic Theatre, Adelaide’s Festival Theatre and Melbourne’s Hamer Hall. In contrast, the Return to Rock Island tour is designed as a much looser, high energy shift back to their pub rock roots. “We’re hitting our favourite pubs in October for something wildly different to Orchestral ’26,” the band said. “Come and enjoy our raucous side, with William Crighton and his band opening all dates. Return to the Metro, the Triffid, the Corner…woohoo.”

Formed in Sydney’s Newtown in 1992 by Tim Freedman alongside Stevie Plunder and Andy Lewis, The Whitlams built their early reputation on piano driven inner city rock and a strong live following before breaking through nationally with Eternal Nightcap in 1997. The album went triple platinum in Australia, peaked at No. 14 on the ARIA Albums Chart, and featured “No Aphrodisiac,” which won ARIA Song of the Year in 1998 and topped the triple j Hottest 100 for 1997.

Their 1999 album Love This City reached No. 3 on the ARIA Albums Chart, while Torch the Moon debuted at No. 1 in 2002, marking their highest chart placement to date. The band also picked up ARIA Awards for Group of the Year and Best Independent Release for Eternal Nightcap at the 1998 ceremony.
