Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield continues finding new generations of listeners more than 20 years after its original release in 2004. The song has already lived through several major pop culture moments, including becoming the theme song for The Hills in 2006 and later appearing prominently in the 2023 romantic comedy Anyone But You. Now the track is getting another revival through the children’s series Emmie's Wonder Wardrobe, where it appears as the show’s very first cover song.
Billboard Family exclusively premiered the new version of “Unwritten” alongside its accompanying video from the Moonbug Entertainment series. The show, a spin off connected to Little Angel, follows Baby John’s older sister Emmie, whose colorful wardrobe becomes a gateway into imaginative adventures.
In the newly released clip, Emmie and her friends transform a rainy day into an opportunity for fun by dressing up as mermaids and embracing the weather instead of avoiding it. Riding scooters through puddles while wearing mermaid tails, the scene pairs naturally with Bedingfield’s uplifting lyrics, including the instantly recognizable line, “Feel the rain on your skin/ No one else can feel it for you/ Only you can let it in.”
Lola Reynoso, music director for Emmie's Wonder Wardrobe, explained why “Unwritten” felt like the perfect choice for the series’ first cover release.
“‘Unwritten’ is a timeless pop song that as soon as you hear it you want to sing it at the top of your lungs,” Reynoso told Billboard Family. “Its positive and uplifting energy was an inspiration for the music in Emmie’s Wonder Wardrobe and was the perfect first cover for the show because its message of self discovery and embracing who you are is at the heart of the series. We hope families sing along together and that kids come away feeling inspired to express themselves and celebrate their individuality just like Emmie does in every episode.”
Another reason the song works naturally within the series is because Emmie's Wonder Wardrobe is designed for slightly older preschool audiences who are beginning to move beyond traditional nursery rhymes and toward more recognizable family friendly pop songs. That makes “Unwritten” an ideal bridge between the world of CoComelon and broader mainstream music discovery.
